The Taxpayers’ Union has revealed a Massey University research project involving a kūmara garden, claiming a small cultivation plot cost taxpayers $156,132 and questioning whether the spending represents value for money.
In a social media post, the Taxpayers’ Union published a breakdown of the project costs, saying $111,132 went toward personnel, $25,000 covered team travel, $10,000 was allocated for additional equipment, $5,000 for participant koha, and another $5,000 for story map development.
The group acknowledged that staffing costs reflected the involvement of what it described as “the country’s top scientists,” but criticised the inclusion of koha payments and raised questions about the overall scale of the project relative to its cost.
According to the figures cited, the kūmara garden was established at a marae south of Whakatāne, with travel expenses linked to repeated trips by the research team. The project also included digital storytelling components through a mapped presentation of the research.
Online reaction was sharply critical, with some commenters arguing the garden appeared too small for a serious breeding programme and likening it to a basic home garden that could be created for around $20. Others questioned the purpose of the research and whether the visible output justified the public investment.

The taxpayers Union do a great job. They sent this to me yesterday. Utterly disgraceful when hospitals are chronically underfunded and people suffer on endless waiting lists. The politicians too, are always crying poverty and imposing endless taxes. Its their waste we are funding, they already have enough if they spend wisely and judiciously.
