Former deputy police commissioner Jevon McSkimming will not face charges over a sexual misconduct allegation made by a former police employee, after an independent legal review found insufficient evidence to prosecute.
Police confirmed the investigation met the Solicitor-General’s Prosecution Guidelines, and the Independent Police Conduct Authority is continuing a separate probe into possible non-criminal misconduct and the police response to the complaint.
However, McSkimming, who resigned late last year, is facing eight counts of possession of objectionable material after alleged child exploitation and bestiality images were discovered on his police devices.
Once considered a frontrunner to replace Commissioner Andrew Coster, McSkimming’s fall from grace prompted a review of police IT systems, which found a need for stronger monitoring and safeguards against misuse. He is due to appear in Wellington District Court in November.
