McSkimming email prompted firearms vetting policy change – Media

McSkimming firearms licensing news

An email to former Deputy Police Commissioner Jevon McSkimming from a firearms licence holder concerned about losing their licence over driving demerit points led to changes in how police vet applicants.

Within days, McSkimming directed the Firearms Safety Authority to stop using Police Infringement Bureau data — which covers traffic offences — when assessing whether a person was “fit and proper” to hold a licence.

While McSkimming had the authority to make such changes, Police Commissioner Richard Chambers later said “better judgement” should have been exercised, and the Firearms Safety Authority is now reviewing the decision.

The revelations come after state-funded media obtained emails under the Official Information Act, showing McSkimming acted after being contacted by an acquaintance, raising questions about process integrity and the balance between fairness and public safety in firearms licensing.

  1. Jevon McSkimming was appointed Deputy Police Commissioner by the Governor-General, based on the recommendation of then Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, following a process managed by the Public Service Commission and endorsed by the Police Commissioner and Minister of Police
What could possibly and did go wrong?

  2. Looks like a “stitch up” to me. The state imposing/forcing its rule. Wrong think/action not tolerated.
So, he had the authority, used his authority and went through a process to make such changes, i.e. to stop using Police Infringement Bureau data — which covers traffic offences from being used in the vetting process.
All was well until “newly minted” Police Commissioner Richard Chambers, who was not involved in the executive at the time the change was made, said “better judgement” should have been exercised.
Who was pulling his strings to no doubt get this decision reversed and put back in the “lets make this as difficult as possible” application process?

  3. My application for a firearms licence was also rejected on driving demerit points, untill I objected and in writing I pointed out that to become a police officer you could have more demerit points for traffic offences than an application for a firearms application and police officers carry firearms..
noted that the standard for a firearms licence holder is higher than a police officer, there for firearms holders should operate as police officers.
The law is ludicrous and the police are infiltrated with political corruption and biased towards my personal opinions and Christian beliefs.,.My application was approved after 4 years of going through a system until a court review was applied for and the commissioner reviewed my case and found no reason for refusal…I don’t believe any police officers lost their jobs over bungled interpretations of the law…Guilty until you prove your innocence appears to be the case in NZ, sadly we have become a police state in the last generation
