Millions of US student loan defaulters face renewed debt collections amid criticism of Biden policy

US Student loan news

Starting May 5, the Department of Education will resume debt collections for millions of student loan borrowers in default, ending a pandemic-era pause in place since March 2020.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon blamed the Biden administration for misleading borrowers about debt forgiveness, asserting the executive branch lacks the constitutional authority to cancel federal student debt.

The Department cites over 5 million borrowers already in default, with nearly 10 million potentially at risk.

Borrowers will receive notices urging repayment or enrollment in relief programmes, with wage garnishments and withheld federal benefits, including tax returns and Social Security, set to follow later this year.
