Nineteen-year-old Maia Johnston, who went missing during heavy rain on Saturday night in Upper Hutt, has been found alive but injured in the dense bushland behind Totara Park.

Johnston, who sustained a broken leg, broken ribs, and a split lip, was located by police search and rescue teams on Monday afternoon.

Her discovery brought immense relief to her family, friends, and the wider community. Johnston, who was reportedly “cracking jokes” despite her injuries, is now receiving medical care after being airlifted to safety.

Her mother, Amy Walsh, expressed disbelief and gratitude, saying, “I thought she was dead.”

The search effort saw extraordinary support from the local and national community.

Strangers, families, and emergency services rallied to aid the rescue mission, with volunteers coming from across the country.

Helicopters, ambulances, and specialized equipment were deployed to ensure Johnston’s safe evacuation from the remote area. Police and rescue coordinators praised the community’s resilience and support, highlighting Totara Park’s tight-knit spirit.

Johnston’s recovery is now the priority.
