Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Auckland for the first visit by an Indian prime minister to New Zealand in four decades, marking a significant milestone in bilateral relations.
Welcomed by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon with a formal guard of honour, Modi’s brief visit centres on strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, security, education, tourism and sport, following the signing of a controversial free trade agreement.
His itinerary includes meetings with business and sporting leaders, as well as a large community event at Spark Arena, while heightened security measures and traffic disruptions are in place across Auckland.
The trade deal has passed its first reading in Parliament with Labour’s backing, although New Zealand First has not supported the legislation, characterising it as a “sell-out”.

Norman Kirk was a great man who never had a chance. Savage was only “okay”. My parents grew up in time in office (no I’m not as old as that might suggest-my parents had me very late in life) but I think they would be horrified by what Labour has become now.
