At least nine people have been killed and around 25 others injured following a shooting that unfolded at a secondary school and a nearby home in Tumbler Ridge, a remote community in north-eastern British Columbia, Canadian police say.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed six victims were found dead inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, while a seventh died while being transported to hospital. Two additional victims were located at a separate but connected location. Police say the suspected gunman was also found dead, appearing to have suffered a self-inflicted injury.
Authorities evacuated about 100 students and staff from the school after responding to reports of an active shooter.
During a virtual press conference, RCMP Chief Superintendent Floyd said investigators believe they have identified the attacker but are not releasing the name publicly at this stage. Police have not confirmed how many of the victims were children, and the motive for the attack remains unknown. Officials said the school shooting and the incident at a nearby residence are linked, though investigators are not yet ready to detail how the events are connected.
