Police have seized five prohibited firearms during a search of a Napier home, leading to the arrest of a 42-year-old firearms licence holder.
The operation followed joint efforts between Eastern District Police and the Firearms Safety Authority, prompted by concerns over the man’s fitness to hold a firearms licence.
The firearms, identified as military-style semi-automatics, were found unsecured in bedrooms used by children. Ammunition was also accessible, and the man lacked the legal endorsement required to possess such weapons. Authorities had previously suspended his firearms licence following a driving incident.
The man now faces 14 charges, including unlawful possession of prohibited firearms, ammunition, and magazines, possession of a pistol, as well as charges related to drink driving, dangerous driving, and using a document to obtain property. He has been remanded in custody.
