The National Party is facing accusations of lying to New Zealanders over the immigration provisions contained within the newly signed India Free Trade Agreement, after critics pointed to treaty clauses they say directly contradict the Government’s public statements.
A detailed analysis circulating online by Ryan Henderson claims the agreement creates multiple uncapped or lightly restricted visa pathways for Indian nationals, despite National insisting the deal “does not open the floodgates” and is limited to around 1,700 temporary work visas annually.
Critics argue the Government’s own treaty text undermines those assurances, citing Annex 8K, which states New Zealand “shall allow the entry and temporary stay” of partners and dependent children accompanying eligible visa holders for periods longer than 12 months.
They also dispute National’s claims that the programme is capped at 5,000 visa holders, arguing that limit only applies to one section of the agreement while several other categories remain uncapped, including specialist worker and student-related pathways.
Additional criticism has centred on provisions allegedly restricting future governments from imposing labour market tests or numerical caps on many visa categories without breaching the agreement.
National has defended the deal as economically beneficial and rejected claims it creates a “back-door” pathway to residency, saying the agreement is focused on addressing skilled labour shortages and boosting exports to India’s vast consumer market.

All of this can be undone, first we could demand India accept our demands, if they dont close the Embassy, second, block all wire transfers between India and NZ, third denaturation and deport.
