National is losing substantial support to both its coalition partners and Labour, with the latest state media RNZ-Reid Research poll revealing that only 56.9 percent of its 2023 voters remain loyal to the party.
Labour has emerged as the biggest beneficiary, attracting 14 percent of former National supporters, while ACT and New Zealand First have gained a combined 18.4 percent. National’s overall support has slumped to 24.8 percent, trailing Labour on 30.6 percent, as growing numbers of its previous voters turn to smaller parties or become undecided, according to the poll.
The findings come amid a controversial campaign encouraging National supporters to give their party votes to ACT or NZ First while backing National electorate candidates, a strategy former Prime Minister Sir John Key has strongly criticised.
Labour is retaining 71.5 percent of its 2023 voters, compared with National’s 56.9 percent, while only 3.3 percent of former Labour supporters have switched to National.
The survey of 1,000 voters, conducted between October 20 and 26, highlights mounting electoral pressure on National, although it remains unclear whether some defections reflect tactical voting rather than genuine changes in political allegiance.
