National MP Tom Rutherford is being hailed for his bravery after he stopped his car and intervened to help a distressed man moving dangerously between lanes on State Highway 2 near Tauranga.
Rutherford, who was returning from a market with his fiancée, was the first to stop and speak with the man, helping guide him to a safer area on the median strip.
With assistance from other motorists who blocked lanes with their vehicles, Rutherford and another bystander calmed the man and convinced him to wait in a car until police arrived and took him to hospital.
Witnesses praised Rutherford’s selfless actions, though the MP said he was simply acting as a concerned citizen.
It took some time but finally a member of parliament helped a man in critical emotional distress.
