Near miss preceded deadly mid-air collision near D.C. airport

Just one night before a deadly collision between an American Airlines Embraer E-175 and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport, another close call occurred in the same airspace.

According to Fox News, a Republic Airways jet attempting to land had to abort its approach after its collision avoidance system detected a nearby helicopter, forcing the aircraft to circle before landing safely.

Despite air traffic control warnings, the helicopter had come dangerously close to the jet’s flight path.

The following night, tragedy struck when American Eagle Flight 5342 and a Black Hawk helicopter collided, killing all 67 people on board both aircraft. Authorities have since transitioned from a rescue to a recovery operation as they search the wreckage.
