Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the military to launch “powerful” strikes on Gaza, his office announced early Wednesday.
The directive followed claims that Hamas violated the two-week-old ceasefire agreement by handing over a coffin that did not contain the body of another Israeli hostage.
According to Netanyahu’s office, forensic tests revealed the remains were those of Ofir Tzarfati, whose body had already been recovered by Israeli forces in late 2023.
The statement accused Hamas of a “clear violation” of the truce mediated by the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey.
Hamas, however, denied any wrongdoing, saying Israel was “fabricating false pretexts” to justify new aggression. The group maintained it was committed to the ceasefire and urged mediators to facilitate efforts to recover bodies still buried under the rubble from two years of war.
