The Newshub newsroom faces potential closure due to a proposal by its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD).
This proposal comes in response to a decline in TV advertising revenue and shifts in viewers’ habits, aiming to shut down all Newshub operations by June 30. This includes the 6pm news bulletin, hosted by Samantha Hayes and Mike McRoberts. The closure will see a significant reduction in local content on both Three and its streaming platform, ThreeNow.
If the closure goes ahead, it will conclude nearly 35 years of news broadcasting on Three, affecting approximately 200 employees across various roles, from journalism to production. The move would also result in a near-monopoly for state-owned TVNZ in TV news production.
The announcement was made during a meeting led by James Gibbons, head of WBD’s Asia Pacific operations, who cited a rapid decline in television advertising revenue as a primary reason for the proposal. Glen Kyne, head of WBD’s New Zealand operation said it was a difficult decision, given Newshub’s importance to both the network and New Zealand’s media landscape.
This proposal is part of a broader strategy to revamp WBD’s operations in Australia and New Zealand, focusing more on the ThreeNow streaming platform as traditional TV viewership decline. WBD is currently consulting with affected staff, with a final decision expected in early April.

In the media they used the term “news production” for what newshub does and not “independent, unbiased journalism.” I can’t think why that would be.
