Newsroom journalist Mark Daaldler has targeted NZ First over its candidates’ comments on mass migration, focusing on their references to “replacement theory”.
Rotorua candidate Billy Brown warned that “replacement theory is happening” in New Zealand. Last year, New Zealand had a net loss of 37,700 citizens and approved 48,501 migrants for residence.
Brown blamed the “two old parties” for forcing migration. NZ First deputy leader Shane Jones previously said those being replaced were “indigenous New Zealanders, white and brown”.
NZ First has proposed a referendum on capping resident visas at 20,000 per year, which would mean net negative migration of 17,700 annually based on 2025 figures.
