New Zealand and Samoa have finalised a compensation agreement over the HMNZS Manawanui disaster, with details to be announced by Samoa’s government on Monday, the one-year anniversary of the navy vessel’s grounding and sinking off Upolu.

Samoan village elders had long pressed for redress for reef damage and losses to fishing and tourism, while former prime minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa said New Zealand had been “very forthcoming” in negotiations. Further details of the deal are expected to be released on Monday.

The agreement follows an April inquiry that found the ship’s crew was undertrained and the vessel unfit for its mission.
