The government has temporarily closed its embassy in Tehran and evacuated two staff members and their families overland to Azerbaijan amid escalating regional tensions.

Foreign Minister Winston Peters said the move was part of a multinational convoy and driven by the government’s duty of care to its personnel.

While urging New Zealanders in Iran and Israel to leave if safe to do so, Peters warned airspace may remain closed for weeks.

The government is coordinating with Australia and regional partners, and providing overland exit advice while exploring future evacuation and commercial travel options.
