NZ – India Free Trade Agreement takes effect

New Zealand’s free trade agreement with India is now in force, eliminating tariffs on 57 percent of Kiwi exports, including sheep meat, wool, coal and most forestry products.

Trade Minister Todd McClay said duty-free coverage would eventually reach 82 percent, with further reductions beginning on 1 January 2027. Negotiated in nine months after talks began in March 2025, the agreement offers major opportunities for wine exporters, with Indian tariffs of 150 percent progressively falling to 25 or 50 percent over 10 years. McClay said the deal would strengthen export diversification, expand access to India’s rapidly growing economy and support New Zealand’s goal of doubling export value within a decade.

Critics have questioned whether the agreement delivers benefits for New Zealand, pointing to significant differences in the timing and extent of tariff reductions. While Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has described the deal as exceptionally favourable, concerns have been raised that India receives immediate tariff-free access to New Zealand’s market, whereas New Zealand exporters must wait years for comparable concessions, with some products remaining subject to duties even after full implementation. Questions have also been raised about the scale of New Zealand’s investment commitments in India, provisions allowing the agreement to be terminated and mass immigration.

  1. The Indians starting flooding into “New Delhiland” years ago and is not about to stop, thanks to the ‘swamp’ and their FTA contract.

  2. Reminds me of a Genesis Album
    “Selling England by the Pound”
The thing is how many tracks are on this album and how long can it play out for?
Before we wake up destitute and disinherited in the land our White forefathers created?

  3. So let me get this right… NZ can export coal, but we can’t utilize our own high calorific black coal to power Huntly coal fired power station? We import that low calorific brown coal from Malaysia!

    • Like salt
Production capacity is the primary structural reason not a cost crossover at Auckland at which point it becomes cheaper to import
While the customers of Dominion Salt (dairies, food processors, water treatment) may be essential, the salt production site itself doesn’t carry that designation
The main reason NZ imports coal is a grade mismatch not a lack of domestic coal
NZ produces ~2.6 million tonnes/year (mostly West Coast bituminous coal) and is a net exporter — but that coal is the wrong type for what it needs to burn domestically

  5. In what crazy world does ‘Indian tariffs of 150 percent progressively falling to 25 or 50 percent over 10 years’ constitute a Free Trade Agreement?

These people are just taking the piss, aren’t they?

  6. McClay and Luxon embarrassingly duped by the Indians.
