Experts from the Public Health Communication Centre (PHCC) have sounded the alarm, cautioning that New Zealand is teetering on the edge of a measles outbreak due to a surge in ‘unimmunised’ children.
The briefing released today claimed a the number of susceptible children to measles is steadily increasing, reminiscent of pre-epidemic levels seen in the 1980s and 1990s.
The briefing noted a rise of about 1,000 measles-susceptible children every month, nearing the levels observed before measles outbreaks in 1980, 1985, 1991, and 1997.
Dr. Oz Mansoor and colleagues saidt the current situation leaves New Zealand vulnerable to a large-scale epidemic, particularly with a growing population of susceptible young adults.
Recalling the devastating 2019 outbreak that infected over 2,000 and hospitalised more than 700, the briefing emphasised the urgent need for action to avert a similar crisis. Notably, the outbreaks in New Zealand spilled over to Samoa, allegedly resulting in 83 measles-related deaths, predominantly among children under 5 years old.
Mansoor outlined three crucial actions required. First was implementing catch-up immunisation for children aged 15 months to 9 years who have not received the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, aiming to achieve the recommended 95% coverage.
Second was the improvement of communication to travellers about measles risks, especially for residents returning home who are more likely to import the virus. The briefing suggested exploring measures such as enforcing ‘compulsory’ measles immunity documentation for travel, albeit acknowledging legal and logistical challenges.
Third was a stronger immunisation component in response to measles cases.
‘This could include targeted vaccination of susceptible individuals in communities where cases occur. Basically, looking at a wider ring of immunisations around an outbreak, using the Aotearoa Immunisation Register,’ said Mansoor.

Maybe ‘vaccine immunization’ will prevent a few deaths. On the other side, without vaccination, the overall NATURAL immunity of a people will increase, by far outweighing the small benefit of a few selected individuals surviving with the shots (+autism?).

ALL of us kids had measles, mumps, diphtheria, rubella and chickenpox etc..
We had our stint with worms (you learned to wash hands), nits (you learned to look after your hair), cut ourselves on umpteen rusty nails (yeah, maybe you needed a tetanus shot) and fell from playgrounds we constructed ourselves out of old building materials in derelict ruins (and you learned tonavigate your instinct).
Yes, there were a few injuries. Buddies who got a plaster casts and the ones who went to hospital were envied.
And yes, a very very very few somehow didn’t make it. But that’s what was called life.
Now look at the death rate from sources I just mentioned vs overall (died suddenly) and you can see the difference in juvenile mortality (one has to take into account the improvement of sanitation, no doubt!)
My kids did not get injected by anything, but they ‘graze’ through the veggie garden (literally), munching on raw broccoli, tomatoes, beans, parsley, etc, as they help with planting, tending and weeding. And that is NOT because they are forced to, but it’s because that’s the life style they’ve become to live, love and enjoy.

I recall my elderly Mum saying she was keen to accept all the invites to birthday parties in the 60’s just to get the Measles and Mumps over and done with…4 children and we all managed to catch it at some point, were well cared for and we all survived!

Some questions should be asked as to why 83 children died in Samoa. What were their Vit A levels like? Were they given a measles jab when they were already infected with the measles? Did Samoa have access to the same batches of vaccinations that were used in NZ?
