The New Zealand Outdoors & Freedom Party is sounding the alarm on a looming national crisis, as refined fuel stocks face potential depletion by late April 2026.
Energy Spokesperson Lester Bryant warns that the escalating Iran US conflict has exposed the catastrophic vulnerability of New Zealand’s supply chain following the closure of the Marsden Point refinery.
With the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed to stable shipping, New Zealand’s reliance on South Korean and Singaporean refineries—which provide over 80% of our refined fuel—has left the country structurally exposed.
The Failure of “Just-in-Time” Logistics
“New Zealanders are being told we have 46 days of fuel cover, but the reality is much bleaker,” says Lester Bryant. “Much of that is ‘on-water’ inventory that may never arrive due to skyrocketing insurance premiums and a collapse in tanker availability. We are seeing a supply severance that the current Government is trying to manage with a failed Covid-era communication template.”
The party highlights that while the Government prepares ‘alert levels’ and briefings, the physical reality is that the nation consumes 24 million litres of fuel per day. Without the ability to refine crude oil domestically, New Zealand is now competing with every other nation in the Pacific for a dwindling pool of refined product and with Australia, Asia and much of the rest of the world for access to raw product for refining.
Key Concerns for New Zealand’s Security:
- Refinery Reliance: South Korea and Singapore are already slashing run-rates by up to 60% and implementing export caps.
- The Marsden Point Void: The 2022 closure of Marsden Point has stripped New Zealand of the ability to process crude oil or blend fuels, leaving the nation entirely dependent on finished products from volatile regions.
- The Logistics Trap: Re-routing tankers around the Cape of Good Hope has tripled transit times from 20 days to 90 days, effectively breaking the “just-in-time” delivery model.
- Rural & Food Security: Diesel depletion by early May would cripple the agricultural sector, freight networks, and food distribution, threatening the basic survival of local communities.
A Call for Immediate Action
The NZ Outdoors & Freedom Party is demanding a pivot toward true energy resilience and the protection of New Zealand’s sovereignty:
- Truth in Communication: The Government must stop using misleading “days of cover” statistics and provide honest, transparent data regarding confirmed physical stock on New Zealand soil.
- Emergency Prioritization: Immediate safeguarding of fuel for the primary sector, emergency services, and essential freight to prevent a collapse of the food supply chain.
- Long-Term Infrastructure: A commitment to rebuilding domestic refining capacity and establishing physical strategic reserves that are not dependent on “paper tickets” or international shipping whims.
- Local Self-Sufficiency: Strengthening regional resilience to ensure that rural communities are not the first to suffer when global supply lines fail.
“This is not a price spike; this is a supply severance,” says Bryant. “Our vulnerability was a choice made by successive administrations that prioritized corporate efficiency over national security. We must act now to secure alternative supply and prepare our population for the reality of this structural crisis.”

Not “just in time logistics”
It’s pre-meditated societal collapse enforced by a compromised govt. They brag about one world government contracted to cloward and piven.
But will you define them of being what they are? That is treasenous traitors aka domestic terrorists.
U go mate 👍
Trump and Kushner are creamimg the oil futures market
Just did the math.
On 24 Million Litres of fuel per day. Putting aside the different fuels and being very simplistic.
If fuel per L is $2.75
Here is how the taxes work. As of mid 2024
$1.20 per L excise tax
14 cents Emissions trading scheme
36 cents GST ( note the gst tax on the fuel AND on the exise tax)
So $2.75 per L equals $1.70 of tax and $1.05 for the fuel. Now times that by the 24 million litres of fuel…………..
We The People need a decisive review of what government ought to be.
It seems very clear that this newly erupted war ( thank you Trump and Milkovky ( Netanyahu) will be raging for a very very long time.
Therefore all over the world many governments will be just toppled . When people are starving and have lost everything they have taken for granted all their lives that those in power should be very very concerned.
Europe will become a catastrophe, just after this Middle East Area.
Regarding New Zealand the elections could stunned everybody.
The current government seems to be just following the Covid trickery but this time this won’t work. First reason: We have already seen this crap.
Second reason: this is far far more serious than some lies about ‘contagious deadly disease’ .
Anyway full marks to ‘NZ Outdoors and Freedom Party’ for coming out with a pragmatic steps that does not sound like a Covid trickery all over again.
We trust that there are endeavours to coalign the small splinter parties into one big coalition.
The people want that.
The people need that.
Parliament and the Energy Ministers were made aware of this perceived problem over 2 years ago.
How do I know this?
BECAUSE I SENT THEM THE PROJECTED DATA IN THE EVENT OF A WAR, SANCTIONS, AND THE BLOCKADES OF OUR ISLAND NATION!!!!
I never got an answer back…so what does THAT tell you about the contempt that Parliament has, and the arrogance of forcing a golbal energy policy on the population of New Zealand,…!
Regrettably, you are asking mostly self serving idiots, who don’t know what sovereignty means, to actually show genuine ability and courage, they simply don’t possess.
If things grow dire the best outcome from this, will be their collapse and a final harsh comprehension from the people of New Zealand, of what they have actually been wasting their votes on for generations.
