Internal Affairs Minister Brooke van Velden has confirmed that future New Zealand passports will feature English above te reo Māori, reversing the current design introduced in 2021 where “Uruwhenua Aotearoa” appears first.
While new passports are being developed with security upgrades and the English-first format, the government will continue issuing remaining stock of the current design.
The change comes amid political debate over the use of the name “Aotearoa,” with NZ First leader Winston Peters arguing it is not New Zealand’s official name and should not appear on government documents without public consultation.
