The New Zealand Defence Force has lowered some of its academic entry requirements in an effort to widen its recruitment pool and address declining enlistment numbers.
Roles such as army combat specialists, navy divers, and air force firefighters now require just three years of high school instead of specific NCEA credits, while more technical positions have seen Level 2 certificate requirements streamlined.
The move has been prompted by high attrition rates, with the need to respond to alleged “educational inequalities” has led to a spike in applications in 2024—but actual enlistments remain below target.
Bureaucrats say the quality of recruits has not been compromised, and new marketing efforts aim to attract more young people who may feel the lifestyle isn’t for them.
Meanwhile, the Defence Minister Judith Collins has acknowledged the need for increased funding, with a strategy document expected soon to tackle workforce challenges.
