NZ’s spy agency NZSIS has warned that the country is facing its most challenging national security environment in recent times, with growing risks from foreign interference, espionage, and online radicalisation.
Its third annual Security Threat Environment report highlights deteriorating global stability, polarisation, and state-sponsored efforts to influence New Zealand communities and institutions, including diaspora groups.
China was singled out as demonstrating both the capability and willingness to target New Zealand’s interests, while unnamed states were also implicated in interference and repression tactics.
The report warned that young and vulnerable people are increasingly at risk of online radicalisation, with lone-actor extremism remaining the most likely threat scenario.
It also cautioned that artificial intelligence is amplifying extremist propaganda, lowering barriers to attack planning, and accelerating state-backed influence campaigns.
State backed influence campaigns, this has been ongoing for years with the covid pandemic as the prime example. Great that this is finally becoming mainstream information though
