A person has died after a vehicle crashed into the water in Wairoa early this morning.
Emergency services were called at around 4.10am to reports of a car entering the Wairoa River near the intersection of Carroll Street and River Parade.
Police confirmed that one person was recovered from the water, deceased, outside the vehicle. While authorities do not believe anyone else is unaccounted for, the Police National Dive Squad is being deployed to thoroughly inspect the submerged vehicle.
Cordons remain in place as emergency crews continue their work at the scene, and motorists are advised to avoid the area where possible.
