One person has died and several others have been injured following a house fire in Christchurch on Thursday night.
Emergency services were called to a property on Whitehall Street about 8.25pm after reports the house was ablaze and that some occupants were unaccounted for.
Christchurch Metro Area Commander Superintendent Lane Todd said emergency crews, including Police and fire services, remained at the scene late into the night as investigations continued.
Police confirmed one person died in the fire. Another person remains in a critical condition, while three others suffered moderate to serious injuries. Two additional people sustained minor injuries.
Cordons remain in place around Whitehall Street and Hills Road while investigators work to determine the cause of the fire and establish whether anyone else remains unaccounted for.
Members of the public have been urged to avoid the area while emergency services continue their work at the scene.
