Legacy media journalist Paddy Gower has publicly acknowledged that aspects of his reporting during the country’s Covid-19 response ‘crossed ethical lines’, saying he now regrets parts of his role during one of New Zealand’s most divisive periods.
Speaking on a legacy media podcast, Gower said he “threw journalistic ethics out the window” at times while covering the government’s elimination strategy, including his prominent role fronting the nationally televised Super Saturday Vaxathon and his reporting on protests against vaccine mandates.
He said one of his strongest regrets was the way he covered the 2022 Parliament Protest, where protesters camped for weeks in opposition to mandates and wider pandemic restrictions. Gower also reflected on a 2021 investigation involving a doctor issuing vaccine exemptions, saying he now believes he should have ‘listened more carefully’ to dissenting voices rather than approaching the issue from a firmly pro-vaccine perspective.
While maintaining that he still supports vaccination and does not reject the public health value of Covid vaccines, Gower said media organisations should examine how coverage during the pandemic contributed to social division and mistrust. He argued that journalism during that period often became too closely aligned with public messaging, rather than maintaining distance and scrutiny.
The comments have prompted mixed reactions online, with some welcoming the acknowledgment as overdue self-reflection, while others slammed him for the harm caused to individuals criticised during that period which cannot be addressed by apology alone. Critics have pointed in particular to lasting reputational damage suffered by some people featured in media reporting during the height of the pandemic debate.
And legacy media does not change. There are several ethical failures now in the current Iran war coverage. Legacy media are methodically and deliberately targeting and manipulating people to different issues.
