Pentagon briefing fuels speculation of US ground invasion

The Pentagon held a press briefing as speculation mounts on a possible ground operation.

Overnight, there were reports of significant strikes both on Tehran and Israel, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accusing US‑Israeli “war criminals” of bombing civilian targets, including pharmaceutical plants.

Meanwhile, in Dubai there are reports of loud explosions and a strike on a Kuwaiti tanker, sending US gas prices higher. Oil has slipped by almost 1% on global markets, while Russia has doubled down on its refusal to sell oil and gas to “unfriendly” nations.

The Pentagon held its sixth press briefing since the conflict began over a month ago, with Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine appearing before journalists on Tuesday.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio insisted on Monday that “a coalition of nations” would secure the Strait of Hormuz by force while Iran’s ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali spoke to RT’s Sanchez Effect and dismissed US President Donald Trump’s claims that Tehran is negotiating with Washington, saying that US and Israeli officials are “planning how to strike Iran” rather than seeking peace.

Trump has also claimed that his goal of regime change in Iran was achieved by killing the country’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, in the initial strikes on February 28.

“The one regime was decimated, destroyed, they’re all dead. The next regime is mostly dead, and the third regime – we’re dealing with different people than anybody’s dealt with before… it truly is regime change… you can’t do much better than that,” Trump said.

The new leadership in Iran is “very reasonable,” he said, claiming that he feels that a deal with Tehran could be reached “soon.”

The average US gasoline price rose to $4 per gallon on Tuesday, the highest level since 2022. Pump prices are now above levels seen at any point during President Donald Trump’s two terms. Oil prices edged higher, while Asian markets traded lower.

A fully loaded Kuwaiti tanker in waters off Dubai was struck in an Iranian drone attack. Explosions were heard across Tehran after Israel’s military said it carried out multiple waves of strikes on targets in the Iranian capital. In central Israel, cars caught fire after being hit by falling missile fragments.

Iran’s Tabriz Petrochemical Company has been struck in a US-Israeli attack, according to media reports.

Trump remains “generally open to the idea” of launching a special operations raid on Iranian nuclear sites to seize some 450 kg of enriched uranium believed to be stored there, according to the Wall Street Journal’s sources. The US president also told the Financial Times that he was not ruling out the possibility of seizing Iran’s key export hub, Kharg Island, in order to take control of Tehran’s oil exports.

The IDF and Iranian forces have continued to exchange strikes, with videos capturing a major blaze erupting at an oil refinery in Israeli city of Haifa after one of the attacks.

  1. Opening the strait of Hormuz might be possible. But will that get oil flowing.

A large numder of oil tankers are anchored before the strait. They and the oil wells along with oil storage and facilities have to be protected Essentially, held hostage.

Iran has already signaled they will destroy that infrastructure if their infrastructure is destroyed.

The smart thing to do is make a deal with Russia. That will immediately reduce the price of oil. Allow time to build sufficient oil wells elsewhere.

New Zealand has never procedured oil in the volume it needs. The oil refinery only reduced costs of fuels and various products. More urgent need is oil production, storage. Why? Petrol goes off. Oil doesn’t.

Selling more electric vehicles is the easy part. Labour and the Greens cancelled plans to build 6 new power stations over 2 rivers. An over abundance of electricity will keep power prices low.

  2. Iran Directly Names American Corporations they are Going to Attack and Destroy beginning 1 April 2026. They are not going after a military base or warship. • Since years we have boycotted Israel products, SodaStream one of them. You can actually connect your SodaStream machine to a big CO2 bottle with a bit of mod to the proprietary connection. Much much cheaper!
But from today we also boycott anything American made because of thejr war crimes against civilian people of Iran and Lebanon.
      To hell with imperialist bullies!

  3. If some dude would have told me, only a few years ago, a story of the West, lead by Satanyahu and Dumb, whereby thej wreck the precarious World Order, I would have thought he’s nuts.

  4. We the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible, for the ungrateful.
We the sheeple, led by the most ruthless, will have to learn to do the impossible, to the barbaric elite.
We the civilised remnants, cheated by the most cunning, will learn being relentless, to eradicate parasitism.
We the surviving, void of the satanic, will rebuild after total collapse, and spit on thejr graves.

  5. “….while Russia has doubled down on its refusal to sell oil and gas to “unfriendly” nations.”

As I’ve said here before Russia probably wont sell to NZ due to politicians here supporting the Kiev regime with our tax payer funds. Enjoy car less days and old meals every other evening people. After all who doesn’t like salads in winter?

Oh and forget Marsden Point re-opening because, you know, climate change. That’s i spite of the fact the country runs on oil anyway….its just someone else’s at a MUCH higher price.

  6. As expected thanks to our bright leaders the west is going to fall like the house of cards.
Ground invasion is another disaster waiting to happen.
Trump is totally unhinged sinking the whole world into the abyss.

If Israel uses nukes which is not excluded any more this will be another suicidal move since it is highly likely that the iranians are very close to developing or perhaps even having nukes themselves. And also Pakistan has promised to nuke Israel if Israel nukes Iran ( or Trump for that matter )
