Winston Peters has held high-level talks in Washington DC with Marco Rubio, covering a wide range of strategic issues including bilateral relations, global conflict, and regional security across the Pacific and Indo-Pacific.
The meeting, held Tuesday morning (US time), followed an invitation from Rubio and focused on strengthening ties between New Zealand and the United States. Both leaders discussed defence and security cooperation, as well as trade and economic links, including ongoing negotiations between Trade Ministers over tariffs and continued dialogue on critical minerals cooperation between the two countries.
The escalating conflict in the Middle East was a central topic, with Rubio outlining US efforts to bring the war to an end, while Peters highlighted the significant economic consequences for New Zealand and Pacific nations.
Discussions also turned to the Pacific Islands, where Peters invited the United States to attend next year’s Pacific Islands Forum, which New Zealand will host. He encouraged continued US engagement in the region alongside New Zealand and Australia, with talks covering key issues such as energy supply chains and transnational organised crime.
The meeting concluded with a broader discussion on the Indo-Pacific, where both sides reaffirmed their shared strategic interests as Pacific democracies and underscored the importance of ongoing cooperation in an increasingly complex geopolitical environment.
