Poland will be ‘wiped off the map in days’ – Putin aide

Poland could effectively be destroyed as a functioning state within just days if it entered a direct military confrontation with Russia, a senior Kremlin official has warned, delivering a stark response to Warsaw’s claim that NATO could rapidly defeat Moscow.

Nikolay Patrushev, an aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, issued the warning after Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski argued that Poland and its NATO allies would possess overwhelming air superiority in a potential conflict with Russia.

Speaking at the Yalta European Strategy meeting in Kiev, Sikorski claimed that if Russia attacked NATO and the alliance abandoned restraint, Moscow could be defeated “quite quickly.” He also suggested NATO forces would be capable of crippling Russia’s oil-refining infrastructure within six weeks.

Patrushev rejected those claims as a serious miscalculation of Russian military capabilities, describing Sikorski’s assessment as “amateurish.” He argued that Russia is currently employing only part of its overall military potential in the Ukraine conflict.

According to Patrushev, the consequences for Warsaw would be catastrophic if Poland itself entered a war against Moscow.

He warned that Russia would deploy the full range of forces and resources available to it and claimed Polish statehood could “cease to exist within two or three days.”

Patrushev also accused Sikorski of pursuing an increasingly hostile and “Russophobic” approach towards Moscow, arguing that such rhetoric risks exposing Poland to destruction rather than strengthening the country’s security.

Other senior Russian officials have responded similarly. Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandr Grushko ridiculed Sikorski’s calls for NATO to conduct more aggressive military exercises near Russia’s Kaliningrad Region, while Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused the Polish minister of extreme anti-Russian hostility.

Poland has been among the strongest European advocates of expanding NATO’s military capabilities along Russia’s western frontier. Warsaw, the Baltic states, Germany and other European governments have repeatedly warned that Moscow could eventually launch an attack against NATO territory and have pressed for higher defence expenditure and an increased allied military presence in Eastern Europe.

NATO members have also debated strengthening the alliance’s nuclear posture, amid reports that US strategic weapons could eventually be positioned in Poland or the Baltic region.

Moscow rejects Western claims that it intends to invade NATO territory, maintaining that such warnings are being used to justify European rearmament and an expanding military presence near Russia’s borders.

Russian officials instead argue that NATO’s military build-up and increasingly confrontational rhetoric are making a direct Russia-NATO clash more likely.

Putin has accused Western governments of openly preparing their populations for the possibility of war with Russia, while Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has insisted Moscow has no reason to attack European countries unless Russia itself comes under attack.

The escalating rhetoric from Moscow and Warsaw underscores the increasingly dangerous confrontation developing along NATO’s eastern flank, where threats once regarded as hypothetical are now being discussed openly by senior officials on both sides.
