British police have confirmed that one of the two men killed in Thursday’s deadly attack on Manchester’s Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue was fatally shot by officers attempting to stop the assailant, 35-year-old Jihad al-Shamie, who had driven into pedestrians and stabbed worshippers during Yom Kippur.
Greater Manchester Police chief constable Steve Watson said the tragic death of Adrian Daulby, 53, and a non-fatal gunshot injury to another worshipper occurred as officers tried to prevent the attacker, who appeared to be wearing an explosive vest, from forcing entry.
Melvin Cravitz, 66, was also killed in the assault before police shot Shamie dead.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct has launched an investigation, while Shamie’s family expressed shock and disavowed his actions.
The government pledged stronger measures against antisemitism as Jewish leaders highlighted escalating threats, with incidents at record highs since the Gaza war.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy visited the scene, where Lammy was heckled by mourners demanding tougher action against antisemitic hostility and pro-Palestinian marches.
