Firefighters have revealed they repeatedly sought a helicopter to rescue a 13-year-old girl stranded on a Coromandel cliff after she witnessed her friend fall to his death, but police declined the request after mistakenly concluding the girl had also died.
The incident occurred at Hahei Beach on 11 January, shortly before 8pm, when the boy fell 15–20 metres onto rocks below. The girl remained trapped high on the cliff face in darkness for several hours.
According to a report in state media, Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) asked police to authorise an air ambulance helicopter to transport a specialist lines rescue team from Hamilton, but emails and call logs obtained by RNZ show the request was declined, with cost cited and the incident incorrectly categorised.
As a result, the team travelled by road, arriving more than two hours later, and the girl was finally rescued just before midnight.
Police have since apologised, acknowledging failures in information-gathering and decision-making. FENZ communications from the night describe distress, frustration and ongoing concerns about repeated delays in helicopter approvals for cliff rescues, warning that procedural gaps and miscommunication risk serious harm.
