Police are investigating allegations that two teenagers were indecently assaulted at Pt Erin Pools in Herne Bay earlier this week, after the youths reported being approached by a man at the facility.

Detective Senior Sergeant Vanessa Pratt told state media officers were speaking further with the teenagers to establish what occurred and to provide support, while inquiries were also under way with pool staff.

Police have appealed for witnesses who were at the pools on Tuesday and may have seen suspicious behaviour to come forward.

A parent of one of the boys told state media the family had been advised not to return to the pools for safety reasons and claimed a lifeguard did not intervene.

Auckland Council has apologised to the boys and their families, saying it is working with pool operator Community Leisure Management to support the police investigation and address any shortcomings identified, while CLM said staff observed no unusual behaviour at the time and are cooperating fully with authorities.
