Police have launched a homicide investigation following the death of a man in Rotorua after a vehicle was found crashed into a tree overnight.
Officers were called to Ford Road just before 8.30pm after receiving reports of a vehicle collision. When police arrived, they located the sole occupant of the vehicle with critical injuries. The man died a short time later.
Detective Inspector Lew Warner said initial inquiries indicate the man’s injuries are not consistent with a crash, prompting police to treat the death as a homicide.
A scene examination and forensic assessment of the vehicle are being carried out as part of the investigation.
Police are appealing for information from anyone who was in or around Ford Road between 8pm and 8.45pm on the night of the incident. Officers are also seeking sightings of a white Toyota Hiace van with the registration DFR734 in the Ford Road area or nearby streets during that time.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police via 105, either by phone or online, quoting file number 251212/4041. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
