Auckland police have launched an investigation after a two-month-old baby was admitted to Middlemore Hospital overnight with serious injuries.

The infant is currently receiving treatment at the Ōtāhuhu facility.

Acting Detective Inspector Veronica McPherson of Counties Manukau CIB confirmed that police are actively working to determine how the baby was harmed.

“We are continuing to make inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the injuries,” McPherson said.

The incident marks the second disturbing case involving a child in Auckland within the past week.

On Sunday, a toddler was discovered inside a suitcase in the luggage compartment of a bus travelling from Whangārei to Auckland. A 27-year-old woman has since appeared in North Shore District Court, charged with child ill-treatment.
