Christchurch Police have seized cannabis plants with an estimated street value of $1.1 million following an investigation into large-scale cultivation linked to organised crime.
Officers executed a search warrant at a Waltham property on March 25, where more than 1,000 cannabis plants at various stages of growth were discovered.
Detective Senior Sergeant Tania Jellyman said the seizure had disrupted funding that would have supported organised criminal activity, adding that police would continue targeting commercial-scale drug operations due to the harm they cause in the community.
Four men, aged 37 and 39, were arrested at the property and charged with possessing cannabis for supply, cultivating cannabis, and participating in an organised criminal group.
They appeared in the Christchurch District Court and were remanded in custody, with a further appearance scheduled for April 9. Police said further arrests were possible as enquiries continue and thanked members of the public for providing information.
Cannabis does no harm.
But it does provide a lot of revenue for both sides of the “organised crime” industry.
