Police updates on crimes and investigations for 19 January 2023.
Serious incident – Remuera
Police are in attendance at an incident on Orakei Road, Remuera, which occurred around 1.10pm.
‘At this stage we can advise that one person has sustained critical injuries and has been transported to hospital,’ said a police spokesperson.
A cordon has been set up at the scene and Police advise the public to avoid the area.
Police enquiries are ongoing and in the very early stages.
An update will be provided when we are in a position to do so.
Fatal crash – SH12, Paparoa
One person has died following a crash on State Highway 12, Paparoa, this afternoon.
The crash, involving two vehicles, was reported to Police around 1.58pm.
Sadly, one person has died at the scene.
A second person has been transported to hospital in a serious condition.
The Serious Crash Unit is in attendance.
Due to the crash, State Highway 12 is currently closed, and diversions are in place along Franklin and Stirling Roads.
Unfortunately due to the nature of the roads, these diversions are not suitable for heavy goods vehicles.
Motorists are asked to avoid travel where possible or to expect lengthy delays while the scene is cleared.
Person arrested following fatal crash in July 2022, Havelock North
Hawkes Bay Police have today arrested and charged a 42-year-old man with manslaughter after a fatal motor vehicle crash in Havelock North on 4 July 2022.
The crash occurred on St Georges Road.
The man appeared in Hastings District Court today on several related charges.
Water incident, Glenorchy
A search is ongoing this evening for a person missing in the water at Glenorchy, near the Glenorchy Reserve.
Police and ambulance were called around 4pm to reports one person was in trouble in the water.
Despite efforts of other swimmers, people on jet boats, and a helicopter, the person has not yet been located.
Police remain at the scene.
Man dies after being struck by car in Waimate
Police can now confirm a man struck by a car in Waimate on Monday has died.
Don McCabe, 85, of Waimate suffered serious injuries when he was struck by a vehicle on Harris Street while on a mobility scooter on the evening of January 16.
Mr McCabe was taken to Timaru Hospital, but sadly died on 17 January.
Investigations are ongoing into the circumstances of the collision.
