Police updates – Tangarakau homicide, Castlepoint road death

Police updates for Sunday 8 May 2022.

Serious crash, Kairanga, Manawatū

A person has died following an earlier serious crash in Kairanga.

The crash occurred at around 7:15am when a car collided with a pole on Longburn Rongotea Road.

Sadly, the sole occupant died at the scene.

The road has now re-opened and motorists are thanked for their patience while emergency services attended.

The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.

UPDATE – Investigation following Tangarakau death

A homicide investigation is underway after a man was discovered at a Tāngarākau property on Saturday morning.

Police received a report at about 7am and arrived at the campground to find a deceased adult male.

Taranaki CIB have opened an investigation into the incident, which will be based out of Stratford.

The community will notice an increased Police presence in Whangamōmona and Tangarakau over the coming days while a scene examination takes place.

At this stage formal identification and next of kin notifications have not yet been completed, so Police are unable to release the victim’s name at this time.

There is no further information available at this early stage.

Update – Masterton Castlepoint Road death

Police can now name the man who died after being found unresponsive on Masterton Castlepoint Road on Saturday morning.

He was Lawziah Karaitiana, aged 20.

Our thoughts are with his whānau and loved ones.

Lawziah had been living in the Castlepoint area and Police are continuing work to piece together his movements on the night before he died.

Police have talked to a number of people and are also reviewing CCTV footage from the area, in order to establish the circumstances leading to Lawziah’s death.

Police urge anyone who has information but has not yet gotten in touch with them – including any residents with CCTV cameras overlooking Masterton Castlepoint Road – to contact Police via 105 and quote event number P050489639.
