Police are attempting to waive diplomatic immunity in order to press charges against a person believed to be the partner of an Australian diplomat, following an altercation in Wellington in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A police spokesperson confirmed to legacy media that one individual was briefly taken into custody after a dispute involving three people occurred on Dixon Street at around 3:30 a.m., just hours after the All Blacks defeated the Wallabies 33-13 in the Bledisloe Cup. However, the person was released without charge upon confirmation of their diplomatic immunity.

Reports from Sky News Australia suggest the individual involved was wearing rugby-themed attire and is understood to be the partner of an Australian diplomat.

A waiver will allow police to proceed with charges.

The Australian High Commission referred media inquiries to the Australian Government.

  1. Police do not waive diplomatic immunity. Governments may both agree, one may agree, the other disagree to…

    a. Recall their diplomat(s).
    b. Expel a diplomat.
    c. Waive diplomatic immunity.
    d. Do nothing.

Like it or not, it is not the role of police to make something public to gain or lose sentiment against the minister.

Doing that simply steers the Minister of Foreign Affairs in both countries away from the level of gravity the complaint has made and asks them to consider their own political future.

It does not take into account there may be matters in play including trade, military dependence, closer economic relationship. Another example is the removal of 501’s from Australia. Our minister could use the matter to discuss 501’s being torn from their livelihoods and families when they have lived in Australia since childhood.

Have you forgotten, allegations are not the same as convictions.

The policeman needs a boot in the arse and retraining.

    • That’s what I thought, sounds like a storm in tea cup, a little bit of rileling and an altercation took place.
Diplomatic immunity is for exactly that to protect diplomatic ties and not drag them through the gutter press. Very bad move on wgtn . Police’s part. They are not above the law. However diplomats are. This could be a fiasco. And for what?
