Health New Zealand and privately owned patient portal Manage My Health have been accused of failing to adequately protect sensitive patient information after a major cyber attack exposed the medical records of nearly 100,000 New Zealanders.
Privacy Commissioner Michael Webster found both organisations breached the Privacy Act by failing to maintain sufficient security safeguards, describing the incident as one of the country’s most serious cybersecurity breaches.
The breach, which occurred in December last year, disproportionately impacted Northland patients due to a unique arrangement that transferred hospital discharge information into the Manage My Health system. Webster said both organisations had “failed in their responsibilities” and confirmed compliance notices would be issued requiring further security improvements.
Independent reviews by Deloitte and CyberCX also uncovered widespread cybersecurity weaknesses, with Deloitte warning the health sector’s digital security arrangements were “inconsistent and insufficient” and overly reliant on third-party systems. CyberCX found Manage My Health had significant control failings and was unprepared for an attack of this scale.
Health NZ admitted patients had been let down and apologised for the distress caused, while confirming it had halted the transfer of Northland hospital discharge information into the portal system.
Manage My Health also apologised, saying the attack involved compromised credentials and exploitation of a specific vulnerability. The company said it had since introduced mandatory multi-factor authentication, enhanced monitoring systems, and stronger security controls.
A separate Ministry of Health review described the incident as one of the most serious cyber events experienced in New Zealand, saying the breach resulted from multiple weaknesses rather than a single failure and outlining major reforms aimed at restoring public confidence in the security of health data.
NZ government are relying on subscriptions to private companies in this cyber space. Internet ID will be the same. A corporate with your most sensitive data. What could go wrong.
No doubt the data was probably sold to both health & life insurance companies, in addition to foreign governments and their FUSION Centres plus the databases of the intelligence services.

Genuinely detest Manage My Health. Have had no end of problems with their portal, so this comes as absolutely no surprise, whatsoever. People should have the right to “opt out” of these, to my mind, useless and insecure systems, returning to traditional medicine where your doctor gets off his or her arse and calls you to discuss any medical results and treatments.
You did have the right to. I told my doctors I was not happy giving my health information to a third party. They might not like it that they have to deal with me the old fashioned way, but I don’t give a rats r’s.

Try logging in, two stage security (used to be one) and a very short time to load the number code, my Xtra may be the reason with all their security as well… ‘session expired’.
I have engaged thoroughly with MMH, managed to skip the silly Ai hurdle and ended up emailing a named Indian in India (shock horror) who was the troubleshooter allotted to me.
Endless emails, all it needs is to push the time out to 30-40 minutes. He would bring it up with the team…

The privacy commissioner, a NZ company employee (NZ Government), blasts another NZ company division (let’s face it, its only a stern word); because that division through incompetence has bought the company into disrepute and caused a question of confidence (in the government).
Let’s face it folks, nothing will come from any measure to correct this failure; because your data is in the hands of a privately owned and patented organization. This will be the case for ALL government portals.
