Public consultation on Arms Act rewrite to begin in January

Arms Act news

The government will begin public consultations in January 2025 on a long-awaited rewrite of the Arms Act 1983, Associate Justice Minister Nicole McKee announced.

The reform marks the fourth phase of firearms legislation changes and aims to “modernise the Act” for greater public safety while simplifying compliance for responsible firearms users.

McKee said there was a need for a systematic overhaul, noting that while previous amendments were often made in response to tragic events involving firearms, they were implemented hastily without a full review.

“This Government wants to rewrite the Act to provide a fit-for-purpose regime that enhances public safety and ensures regulatory clarity,” she said. McKee acknowledged the role of law-abiding firearms users, such as hunters, farmers, and competitive shooters, whose activities are integral to communities and environmental protection.

The public consultation period will run from 13 January to 28 February 2025, with a discussion document available on the Ministry of Justice website. Feedback will help shape the policy, with a bill expected to be introduced to Parliament by late 2025, followed by further opportunities for public input through the select committee process.

  1. Now gathering up all of the info that proves firearms are NOT the problem-
Firearms will be needed to protect the NZ Citizenry from invasion, loss of rights, and a rogue globalist government that may depart from the norms of NZ law, civil rights, human rights, and individual sovereignty.
“When a government wants to ban the firearms, then it has devious plans for the citizens.” – George Washington

  2. Remember when an Australian came to New Zealand and shot up a mosque full of immigrants and KIWIS lost a huge chunk of their rights?

  3. There was a time I never understood the US Second Amendment (Right to bear arms law) when there were mass shootings in schools, just so many muggings and murders across that nation. It is insane to think someone could carry a weapon in their pocket and pull it out to end someone’s life. But that’s because New Zealanders were never taught US history.

The US Government has led their nation into an absolute state of vassalage by attacking Hawaii with a blue laser weapon, murdered its own citizens, destroyed housing, property and taken their land. Pure tyranny. Your average .38 special can’t defend against that type of attack, but a nation of 300+ million can take over a government who ordered it.

Situations do change in peoples lives, and it can set even the most sane people off. Folks now live in a fiercely combative world. It is difficult to live fulfilling lives. It would be good if our education system could train people how to react to provocation and conflict. Better still, a proper government knows how to establish safety and prosperity. Prosperity for citizens and not international corporations.

An example of a PM who isn’t performing is UK PM Starmer. Starmer has engineered conflict, hardship, and indebtedness. Starmer has allowed machete carrying thugs from awful parts of the world, and people are forced to carry weapons to protect themselves.

Our previous government promoted indebtedness, dependency and racial privilege that has led to anger and hatred.

It would be helpful if governments governed properly, so we would not need as many police and firearm ownership would not be a concern.

    • I watched something this week (sorry I can’t remember who it was) stating that their grandfather and all his classmates used to take guns to school and put them in a locker so that they could hunt pheasant for dinner on the way home.

And incidentally with everyone at school with guns there were no shootings.

    • Firearms Education would be blended-in to the Cadet Corps and High Schools as a mandatory requirement IF NEW ZEALAND BECAME A NATION OF ARMED NEUTRALITY!

  4. New Zealand needs to add, to their Bill of Rights, the Right to Bear Arms. The Treaty of Waitangi, should also have written into it, the Right to Bear Arms. History shows that all Despotic Rulers have taken away the rights of the individual to Bear Arms. ie Howard, Arden, Trump, Stalin, Mao Zedong et al.
