Senior journalists working on proposal to save Newshub ‘in some form’

Newshub news

In a ‘bombshell’ announcement this week, Newshub’s foreign owners told staff they intend to shut down the ailing legacy media organisation in June.

Newshub senior reporter Michael Morrah told state-subsidised news outlet NZ Herald a group of senior Newshub journalists is planning to meet next week to draft a proposal in hopes of saving the news operation in some capacity. They have been given a two-week consultation period by Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) to discuss and present proposals, which may be extended. Morrah said the aim was to maintain some form of the newsroom and keep people employed, though no specific plans have been made yet.

‘Certainly as a group [of] our 6pm reporters, we want to come together and try to come up with some sort of plan [to present to] management [and] see if they’re going to listen to that, give us serious consideration,’ he told the NZ Herald.

Morrah said the plan to close Newshub was unexpected decision, calling the announcement as a ‘bombshell.’ The announcement had affected staff heavily, with reports of people being stressed, shocked, and even crying. Up to 350 jobs at WBD in New Zealand could be lost, 200 of which are in news-related roles. Despite the doom Morrah vowed to continue reporting ‘until the lights go out.’

Morrah also criticised the lack of government support for the organisation amid declining television advertising revenues and the economic downturn following Covid-19. Attempts to get relief from transmission fees charged by government-owned entity Kordia had also proved fruitless. There were also no laws in New Zealand that require streaming services to contribute to local production, unlike in Canada and Australia.

Morrah said the loss of Newshub not only be a personal one, for him and current staff, but also to the country as a whole.

‘I think losing an entire newsroom is incredibly damaging, not just for myself and my colleagues, but for society at large, the fabric of New Zealand – that’s bad for democracy,’ he said.

  1. Wouldn’t surprise me if this happens in the least
Wars are fought in a battle for control for the hearts and minds
    Called propaganda
If You have been propagandized You have been lied to
Lies garnished with some truth to make the lie more palatable and plausible
He who controls the media controls the people
The larger the lie and the more often it is told the more people will buy into it
Imagine the media as a large Wurlitzer that the govt plays upon
    That makes the right noises
Echoed from the shadows of the Beast MSM
That provides the cover and that holds these cardboard cutouts standing upright
One is wholly dependent and cannot exist without the other

    • Check this out that parallels ‘He who controls the media’….
“He who casts the vote decides nothing-he who counts the vote decides everything!” – *Joseph Stalin
(*REAL J***** name; Iosef Vissarionivich Dzhugashvili)
The MSM septic tank of lies can’t be pumped-out fast enough…and watch how the sociopathic psychopaths howl, whine and lament the loss of their jobs for lying to us all, and treating us all with humourous contempt!
& BTW- we boycotted the advertisers as well, resulting in the MSM revenue loss!
      BAWHAWHAWHAWHAW…!

The exact quote should be “You go woke, You go broke”, socialism always runs out of other peoples money.
As a business I would not spend a dime on TV

  4. This agency has proven itself to be guilty of complicity in pre meditated mass murder.
They pushed the fear and lies while hiding the truth.
    Guilty.
    DELETE THIS FOUL COMPLICIT MOB.

  5. Morrah, you are a moron. In what world do you live in? How can you, as a journalist, afford to be totally oblivious to reality?
Well, you can’t, and that’s why you are fired.

  6. And the money is coming from where?
My guess is the PTB won’t want to lose a part of the propaganda machine, they will just want to restructure and trim the fat. They won’t shut up shop and let the dissenter media fill the vacuum.
