Social media ban floated to reduce student riots in France

z

Following a fire at a high school in France, Salon-de-Provence mayor Nicolas Isnard has called for the power to temporarily cut minors’ access to social media during periods of unrest.

He says social media amplifies the current wave of high school protests and violence. Previous attempts to block social media have faced legal challenges, while France’s Parliament voted in July to ban social media access for under-15s.

However, the Constitutional Council struck down that provision in August, ruling it violated constitutional freedoms. Isnard’s proposal would target minors’ access temporarily during periods of heightened unrest.

More than 6,000 people have so far been arrested since the unrest began on 21 September, most of them minors.
