A 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Hawke’s Bay late Sunday night, just 5km from Pōrangahau, at a shallow depth of 16km.
Over 2,000 people across the central and lower North Island reported feeling the strong tremor, which hit at 11:20 pm.
GeoNet recorded eight aftershocks in the hours following, the largest being a 3.3 magnitude quake.
The event followed a larger 5.7 quake earlier that day in central part of the country, which caused minor structural concerns and led to a temporary evacuation of a Wellington apartment building, though no significant damage was reported.
A late shake this evening (6 Oct) at 11.19pm in the Hawke’s Bay region with a M4.8 quake with strong shaking. It was relatively shallow at 16 km depth and was felt throughout the lower North Island. We have received over 2,000 felt reports.
