A five-storey residential building housing students has collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan neighbourhood, leaving at least three people dead and raising fears that dozens remain buried beneath the rubble.
Witnesses said as many as 50 people may have been inside when the building came down at around 1.30pm on Sunday, with many students believed to have been in their rooms because classes were not being held.
At least eight people have reportedly been rescued, while three others are in critical condition. Construction and excavation work had been taking place in the building’s basement, with a nearby shopkeeper claiming its lower supporting pillars were weak. Some trapped students reportedly managed to make phone calls from beneath the debris as emergency crews mounted a major rescue operation.
An adjoining building was evacuated as a precaution, while police are reportedly searching for the hostel owner. Authorities have yet to establish the cause of the collapse, and student representatives have called for a full investigation into possible negligence.
