Stuff staff slam “disgraceful” pay offer and “hypocrisy” as further strikes loom

Stuff industrial action news

Staff at legacy media company Stuff are considering further strike action after the company reduced its pay offer for digital employees from 2.5% to 2% and confirmed any increases would no longer be backdated to July.

Union E tū says the move punishes workers who previously walked off the job over “insulting” offers and attempts to split their collective agreement into separate deals for Stuff Digital and Masthead Publishing.

Journalists say they have already endured years of sacrifices, including pay freezes during Covid, and accuse the company of hypocrisy given its corporate image and ownership dealings. Stuff has declined to comment, citing ongoing confidential negotiations.

Recently journalist and E tū delegate Tom Hunt described the situation as “disgraceful”.

“Stuff journalists have taken hit after hit to get Sinead Boucher’s company through hard times. We accepted no increases during Covid and effectively nothing last year, because we believed the company when it told us times were tough.

“To now be offered an insulting pay rise, and to see the company trying to split us into different collective agreements, is disgraceful. It shows they plan to keep screwing us for years to come.

“This is from a company that boasts about being a wonderful corporate citizen, all while our owner takes a secret payday from selling a share of the business to Trade Me. The hypocrisy is staggering.”

  1. I expect reports, not essays or explainers from journalists (they seldom know the difference). Journalists are of no use to me as a consumer of news so I don’t need to pay them a cent. If they are any good, then journalists might be of some use to news suppliers – so let’s analyse news supply. If the media truly is independent (and it’s not), then journalists shouldn’t be paid at all because payments (bribes) erode independence. Reports or raw data can be produced by robots and I’m happy to analyse it myself.

Journalists are therefore redundant,…….. unless……. there might be some value to the news supplier if we can be told what to think and be constantly fooled and duped by the media. In this case, the journalist needs to be constantly paid to dream up propaganda and to cleverly invent new lies to replace redundant lies. This is someone else’s problem. I just couldn’t care less.

  2. It’s tough for story writers to realize that they are irrelevant because of their story telling.
Become an investigative journalist and you will succeed.

  3. Journalist???!! More like mockingbirds. They don’t leave the couch, and suck up to leftist looneys, meanwhile New Zealand is heading towards communism if Labour maori and greens get in

  4. All I see is the same repeated garbage that stuff brainwashes the poor weak minded lost all ability to critically think Zombies they lied about COVID the COVID VACCINE being safe and effective the attacks on whisle blowers and scientists Doctors showing the peer reviewed studies on the dangers the amount of MAN-MADE global warming lies and disinformation is absolutely dumbfounded unlawful and utterly disgusting and yes they do deserve a low pay rise because they cant do there jobs they must have the most unknowledgeable journalist Sack the lot of them the Mainstream Media are the Virus

  5. I’ve had a poor opinion for over 40 years of the original Dominion / Evening Post which I believe eventually morphed into Stuff. I recall one headline over 30 years ago on the Evening Post’s editorial page about NZ’s dairy industry discovering a brand new protein in milk and I was immediately interested and wasted over half hour reading it – the news item spread out and over onto the next page. I was beginning my interest in organic food back then and was curious about all the amino acids knowing our foods were deficient – so I really wanted to know about this brand new protein. After reading through the news item, I found it wasn’t a brand new protein they discovered but was just another variant of the same old casein which they previously didn’t know about. But the useless journalism said it was a brand new protein. Today we know it as A2 milk which digests better than A1

Never trust journalists because they don’t understand what they produce. They mislead because they don’t understand the language they use.

  6. I fully support these “journalists” and their strike. I believe their compatriots in RNZ, the Herald et.al. should join them in solidarity, indefinitely.
