TAIC launches investigation after tourist ferry runs aground in Akaroa Harbour

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) has opened an investigation after a tourist ferry carrying passengers on a wildlife cruise grounded in Akaroa Harbour yesterday.

The 17-metre commercial passenger vessel Black Cat reportedly had 38 passengers and three crew members on board when the incident occurred. All passengers were safely transferred to nearby vessels, and no injuries were initially reported. Following the grounding, the ferry began to list and was subsequently beached.

Chief Investigator of Accidents Louise Cook said investigators are seeking assistance from the public as part of the inquiry.

TAIC is asking anyone who witnessed the incident, or who captured photos or video of the vessel or grounding, to come forward.

A dedicated investigation team will travel to Akaroa to begin gathering evidence, including interviewing witnesses, securing electronic data such as photographs and location information, and examining the vessel’s condition, maintenance history, equipment, and design.

  1. The Black Cat vessel is over 20+ years old…but seemed to be well-maintained when we cruised on it 18 years ago.
I can’t help but wonder IF the quakes haven’t raised the seafloor, shallowing-out the usable depth and creating a navigation hazard that was not on the local harbour chart.
Black Cat has operated for many years without any problem, unlike the worn-out ferry services between Picton & Welly.
Still, I think I’ll stay on board my U-Boat….

  2. Shortly before the grounding a passenger reported hearing a voice from the bridge saying “Hey what’s this funny wavy line with these numbers at the bottom of this screen? I can never get the hang of this depth sounder thingy….”
