David Tamihere’s convictions for the 1989 murders of Swedish backpackers Urban Höglin and Heidi Paakkonen have been overturned by the Supreme Court, which ruled his original 1990 trial was fundamentally unfair due to perjured evidence and major changes in the Crown’s case.
The court found that the prosecution’s theory had been significantly altered over time, introducing new locations and unanswered questions that had never been tested before a jury, and concluded that only a retrial could properly determine guilt .
While a retrial has been directed, the final decision rests with the Crown, which must now assess whether sufficient admissible evidence remains and whether proceeding is in the public interest
I know all about perjury from New Zealand police.
There are some special cases where police must be held to account for their wilful actions. Perjury should never be a police complaint matter. It sould be a charge under the crimes act and be held in the appropriate district or high court.

If there is no re-trial, then corrupt individuals in the prosecution will go free.
So I doubt that there will be a re-trial, even though proceeding is in the public interest.
The justice system is systemically corrupt to the core.
I cannot believe the Supreme Court. Is it bored? Williams is the issue, wish he would go. If this was a white guy no way would he be free. Poor family. Law is screwed in NZ! Hope the man gets what he deserves out in the community. Outrageous.
