Te Pāti Māori MP warned over $133k budget overspend amid internal rift

Te Pāti Māori MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi was allegedly warned by Parliamentary Service that her office was on track to overspend its budget by up to $133,000 and urged to take “urgent action” to ensure her staff were paid, according to documents the party sent to its members.

A report in legacy media says the emails, which also make claims about Kapa-Kingi’s son Eru, show officials advised cutting contractor engagement, reducing staff hours, and halting travel to manage the shortfall, warning the issue could be escalated to the Speaker.

Party president John Tamihere followed up with a 72-hour ultimatum, while co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer said the overspend had since been resolved using future budget funds. The release of the documents marks a deepening rift between Kapa-Kingi, her son, and party leadership, following Eru’s recent accusations of a “dictatorial” leadership style and Mariameno’s demotion as party whip.

Whanau is a tribal ID, isn’t it? Do I get that right? There is a whanau, isn’t there? Now why are they not communicating the issue to the misguided? If not, how can ‘whanau’ or being maori have any meaning in today’s world?
