Teachers accuse government of “power grab” over Teaching Council plan

Teaching Council NZ news

Teachers’ unions have condemned the government’s plan to reduce and restructure the Teaching Council, calling it a “blatant power grab” that undermines teacher independence.

Education Minister Erica Stanford announced the council’s size would shrink from 13 to as few as seven members, with a majority appointed by the minister and several of its functions—such as setting teacher training standards—moved to the Ministry of Education.

Stanford cited OECD and ERO reports showing many new teachers felt unprepared, arguing the changes would restore trust and raise standards.

However, union leaders told state-funded media the minister was cherry-picking data, ignoring evidence that most teachers were satisfied with their training, and warned the move would politicise teacher registration and weaken the profession’s autonomy.

“When you look at the pattern of what the minister’s trying to push and the fact the sector’s not complying with what she wants, and the next thing you get this move to take control of the Teaching Council – that certainly looks like a power flex to me,” said Tute Mila, a member of the New Zealand Educational Institute.

“Our professional body – the people that register us, that look after our code, our standards, our professionalism – is being overthrown by the government in a blatant power grab,” said Chris Abercrombie”, Post Primary Teachers Association President.

He said the separation between the sector and the government was critical.

“Teachers should be independent of the government, they shouldn’t be worried that speaking out about their concerns should lead to their registration being under attack.”

  1. Only thing i can say…. HOME SCHOOL. Teach you kids reality not the socialist / globalist rubbish being pushed by most schools and teachers.

  2. What ever is proposed, it won’t go far enough. State school system is not fit for purpose, teachers and their unions/bodies are corrupted with all the various strains of the woke mind viruses. Total purge required.

  3. Not a great fan of teachers.

    1. Super short working day.
    2. Three months holiday a year.

    4. Guaranteed employment.

On the upside, they provide a valuable service. Its easy to get one into bed and toss em out in the morning.

  4. What a joke, their powers are being taken away after screwing our kids?? FOR YEARS. My daughter passed three years, she hardly attended school, how does that work? Waste of taxpayer money for sure!

  5. Labor dumbed down the education system to get more through the doors . Did not care about true education or true results.
They knew Maori etc struggle in school . Hipkins even admitted it today . If it was a challenge they gave up so Labor wanted just push through .
Teachers happy as not results accountable .

  6. Why should teachers be independent of the government when they are paid by the government, or to be more accurate, by the taxpaying public?

  7. It is difficult to say how much damage the introduction of ‘critical maths’ has actually done to date. On the surface it is just laughable, but to try and teach the concept of math bending according to social need or social status is beyond ridiculous and plain insulting. This was obviously done as another ‘divide and conquer’ strategy, as no parent would see any logic in this fallacious concept. Thank you to Erica Stanford for push towards reality based education.
