Three people have been killed and four others injured after gunfire erupted at the Seattle Center during a popular food festival, with police continuing to search for a second suspect believed to have fled the scene.
The shooting began at about 6:01pm local time on Sunday as thousands of families attended the annual event. Witnesses fled in panic, with some taking refuge inside Seattle’s iconic Space Needle as shots rang out across the venue.
Seattle Police Assistant Chief Tyrone Davis said one suspect, described only as a young person, was arrested at the scene, while a second suspect escaped despite officers pursuing them. Police believe the two suspects were shooting at each other, although investigators have not yet determined whether those killed and injured were innocent bystanders or otherwise involved.
Four people remain in hospital in stable condition, including a two-year-old boy. Davis told reporters on Monday that all of the injured were in a stable condition, adding: “This is a tragedy and I’m really sorry this happened.”
Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson described the attack as “an unbelievable tragedy and a horrific act of violence”, renewing calls for stronger action to address gun violence in Seattle and across the United States.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting while efforts to locate the second suspect remain ongoing.
